1998 SCHWINN SUPER STOCK
After my Hoffman was stolen (see Evel Knievel for backstory) I started looking for a new BMX. I was getting out of pipe riding, and back into riding dirt. I went to all the top BMX stores in town, and was having a hard time finding the right bike. All the current race bikes were now coming with aluminum frames, steel was only being used on street and park bikes. It was a long search, but eventually I found a dealer that had this Schwinn Super Stock 1. It was perfect. It had a nice long 21.5 top tube, tubular cranks and a really nice double wishbone frame. With the insurance money I could buy the bike and a new full face helmet, so I bought it and got a good deal on a Troy Lee Edge in black with purple flames. I was happy!
I raced and kept it stock for a few years, then once I stopped racing it just sat around not being useful at all. One day a rep came into the store I was working in, bringing with him a stack of old dragster parts that he couldn't sell. One of the parts he had were these massive dual crown aluminum forks that were off a 20" chopper. I loved the look of them! I bought them for $50 and installed them on the Schwinn later that night. They looked cool, and raised the front a fair bit which was fine for general street riding. One of the best parts I later found out about the forks was that if you popped off the top caps, you could fit 3 cans of beer down each leg. I would load up the legs with beer, and ride to the local track or skatepark on it. When other riders saw me turn up, perform a few jumps and tricks then open up the legs, pull out a six pack and precede to drink and hand them out...They were speechless! Needless to say I eventually sold this to a BMX rider who really liked to drink.
